It's Hawking, not Hawkins. The other two you mentioned are doing mostly string theory, which is kind of 'fringe science' for physicists - not many people are doing it and although it seems cool there's still no evidence to support it. I've got a longer list of great physicists, and they're all doing work that (a) doesn't get them on the news all the time and (b) they didn't write popular books for the public about.
