A question about colds.?

How exactly do people catch colds? My mom thinks that the cold weather somehow depletes the immune system and allows a bacterial infection to occur. Can anybody tell me how exactly people catch colds? I've hear cold weather at best gives you the sniffles, but doesn't actually give you a cold. Does cold weather even effect the chances of getting a cold?
