Confused on history oh my geezzez?

so im reading this book and its talking about the colonial time. It talks about colonists of america were against the brittish and that kind of confuses me. Are the colonists english settlers or brittish settlers? and whats with the war between the brittish and french. are the french english settlers. please explain so this book can start making sense to meee. thank you!
