Two mathematicians prove same theory independently?

I'm sure in high school that we were told about two mathematicians (or maybe scientists) that proved the same thing independently, i.e. they were on different sides of the world. Anyway, I was hoping to cite it as an example in an essay but I can't remember who they are?
