What does this quote mean?

It's saying the gold and silver have no 'real' value and were once just another thing in the dirt until man gave it value as a currency because it was 'rare and pretty'. It's also saying that gold is not inherently better than gold and they were once equals until we gave gold a better value by liking it more.
